A truck driver from Rupnagar has won Rs 10 crore in the Punjab State Dear Lohri Makar Sankranti Bumper-2025 lottery, the biggest prize ever offered in Punjab. The result was announced on Saturday.
Harpinder Singh, from Barwa village in Nurpur Bedi, works as a truck driver in Kuwait. He bought the winning ticket for Rs 500 while on holiday at home.
“I can’t believe it. I feel lucky, and it’s all thanks to God. Everyone should buy a lottery ticket at least once in their life,” says Harpinder, who has been buying lottery tickets for 15 years.
Harpinder recalls buying the winning ticket from a vendor at the Old Bus Stand with his family. He has faced many difficulties in life. He took out a loan to travel to Kuwait for work. A few years ago, his son, Devinder Singh, had to have his left arm amputated after an accident.
Now, Harpinder plans to use the money to start a business for his son and secure his future. Devinder also hopes the money will help him get medical treatment and live a normal life.

In addition to starting a business, Harpinder wants to pay off his debts. When asked if he really needed the money, Harpinder smiled and replied, “Who doesn’t need money?” The Punjab State Lotteries Department officials say that 30 per cent of the prize will be deducted as tax and other charges.
Vendor Hemant Kakkar, who sold the ticket, will also benefit, receiving nearly Rs 25 lakh. The sub-stockist will get Rs 5 lakh. The vendor gains trust from customers for being a reliable ticket seller.
Amid flower petals and drumbeats at the shop, Kakkar says, “As the prize money increases, more people are getting interested in the lottery. But you need to have the courage to buy a Rs 500 ticket first.”
