Yuzvendra Chahal said, “I think it was a team effort. We wanted to stay positive and take two or three wickets in the powerplay. The pitch wasn’t easy, there was turn as well. My first ball turned, so Shreyas said, ‘Let’s have a slip.’ We needed wickets to win this game because the target was low. I always have self-belief. I think about how to get batters out and vary my pace so they have to work hard for their runs.”

Punjab Kings pulled off the unthinkable as they defended the lowest ever total in IPL history with a 16 run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in New Chandigarh on Tuesday.
Chasing just 112, the defending champions looked on course but faltered against a determined PBKS bowling unit. Shreyas Iyer’s side crumbled under pressure as wickets kept falling at regular intervals.
Yuzvendra Chahal was the star with the ball, claiming four wickets for 28 runs in his four overs. It was his second best performance in the IPL and it could not have come at a better time. The win lifts Punjab Kings into the top four and gives their campaign a massive boost.
Can Arshdeep shine? Back into the attack, Arshdeep Singh delivers a tight over to Vaibhav Arora, and it’s a dot ball to start. He’s been impressive so far with 0 for 11 from his first two overs, and this could be the moment for him to strike.
It’s a wicket frenzy for Punjab Kings! Yuzvendra Chahal strikes with Rinku Singh, who’s stumped by Josh Inglis after scoring just 2 runs off 9 balls.
Then, Glenn Maxwell gets Venkatesh Iyer out with a perfect delivery that hits the stumps after Iyer misses his sweep. Maxwell roars as the review confirms it – three reds. Iyer departs for 7 off 4 balls. PBKS are back in the game with two quick wickets.
Yuzvendra Chahal strikes again as Angkrish Raghuvanshi is caught at backward point.
Raghuvanshi attempts to go inside-out through the covers as he backs away towards the leg side. However, the ball is shorter than expected, and the turn away from him catches the outside edge. The ball flies flat and low, and Bartlett reacts quickly, diving forward to take a low catch.
Yuzvendra Chahal strikes! Ajinkya Rahane goes for the slog sweep but misses it completely and is struck plumb on the back leg. The umpire raises the finger without hesitation. A tidy knock, but it ends on 17 off 17 balls with a four and a six. Punjab Kings claw one back.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi collects another boundary, though it wasn’t without a chance. He lofts a full outswinger outside off towards extra-cover, who had an opportunity but didn’t go full stretch to his right. The ball sails past and adds four more to the tally. A big over for KKR , 19 from it and 29 off the last two as the pressure piles on PBKS.
PBKS are trying hard to hunt wickets as they continue their efforts to break the partnership. Angkrish Raghuvanshi finds the boundary with a confident shot, while Arshdeep Singh bowls a back-of-a-length delivery to Rahane, who carefully runs it down to third man for a single. Despite the runs, PBKS remain determined to find the breakthroughs.
In the very next over, PBKS strike again as Bartlett removes Quinton de Kock for just 2 runs. de Kock, looking to find his rhythm, is caught by Suryansh Shedge at cover, leaving the chasing side in further trouble.
Marco Jansen gets the first breakthrough for Punjab Kings! He bowls a perfect delivery to Sunil Narine, who’s clean bowled for just 5 runs off 4 balls. Narine’s departure gives PBKS a crucial early breakthrough in the chase.
The chase begins with Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine at the crease. de Kock will take the strike, and Marco Jansen will open the bowling attack for his side.
Punjab Kings struggled throughout their innings, with poor shot selection and miscommunication in the middle. Arshdeep and Bartlett made a mess of running between the wickets, and as a result, PBKS were bundled out for just 111.
Bartlett carves out a streaky boundary. Nortje bangs it in short, and Bartlett backs away, swinging blindly. The ball takes the top edge and sails over the keeper for a one-bounce four.
What a bizarre dismissal! Jansen steps out of his crease, looking to flick the ball through the leg side, but completely misses the line. He ends up yorking himself, and Narine hits the off stump to send him packing.
Another wicket down for PBKS! Varun Chakravarthy gets the breakthrough as Glenn Maxwell is bowled out for 7 off 10 balls. The carrom ball from Chakravarthy beats Maxwell completely. On the back foot, looking to force it through the off-side, he misses as the ball spins sharply to hit the top of middle and off. A disappointing outing for Maxwell once again. PBKS are now 79/6 in the 9.4 overs.
And another wicket falls! Anrich Nortje strikes as Nehal Wadhera is caught by Venkatesh Iyer. Wadhera departs for 10 off 9 balls, having hit two boundaries, and the Punjab Kings’ rebuilding effort takes a hit.
Nehal Wadhera and Glenn Maxwell are looking to rebuild the Punjab Kings innings. Nehal Wadhera finds the boundary with a well-timed shot to deep mid-wicket. On the very next ball, he punishes Anrich Nortje for pace, smacking it for another four.
Harshit Rana strikes again! Prabhsimran Singh is caught by Ramandeep Singh as Rana continues to dominate Punjab Kings. A 140kph length ball wide of off stump, Prabhsimran goes for a cut but slices it straight to backward point. He had hit two sixes earlier in the over and could’ve played it safe, but that’s not the modern T20 way, is it? Prabhsimran departs for 30 off 15 balls.
Wickets are falling rapidly. Varun Chakravarthy bowls Josh Inglis for 2 off 6, leaving Ricky Ponting looking worried as his side is now 3 down inside the powerplay. Inglis misjudged a sweep shot, and Chakravarthy’s slight change in length had him bowled out.
PBKS 54/3 (5.4)
Harshit Rana turned the match around with two quick wickets. First, Priyansh Arya was caught by Ramandeep Singh after hitting a short delivery from Rana for a six but misjudging the next one. He edged it to fine leg for a catch, falling for 22 off 12 balls.
Then, Shreyas Iyer went for a cover drive but sliced the ball flat and high, only for Ramandeep to take a stunning catch at deep backward point. Iyer departs for a duck, and Rana has struck twice in quick succession.
PBKS 40/2 (4.1)
Harshit Rana enters the attack, and Priyansh Arya gives him a warm welcome. First ball, too full, too wide, begging to be punished, and Priyansh doesn’t hold back. He throws his hands at it and sends it soaring for six. That’s a statement.
Both Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh are making the KKR bowlers work hard. They’re stepping out with intent, finding boundaries with ease, and keeping the pressure on. Priyansh Arya finishes the over with a strike-retaining single, stabbing a back-of-a-length delivery square on the off-side. That’s 20 off the over. The Indian lads are on fire.
Arya picks up a couple. Arora gets some sharp swing, curling it from leg to off stump. Arya goes for the big loft down the ground but doesn’t quite middle it, ends up slicing it high over the infield at cover. Two runs for the effort.
Game on! Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, the only uncapped opening duo this season, stride out to the middle for PBKS. They’ve been lighting it up at the top, giving their side brisk starts throughout the campaign. With the new ball in hand, Vaibhav Arora gets ready to launch KKR’s bowling attack.
