Priyansh Arya, the centurion, is in for a chat. He says that he is not expressive, but it feels good. Shares that Shreyas asked him to back his instincts and play his natural game. Adds that his mindset was if it is in the slot, it needed to be hit, even if it is the first ball.
For CSK, it was a forgettable outing with the ball. While they did manage to pick up wickets, the economy rates took a severe beating. To make matters worse, sloppy fielding and dropped catches only compounded their troubles, and these errors could prove costly in the grand scheme of this match.
Shashank Singh provided the perfect foil, and together, they stitched a crucial 71-run stand that kept Punjab’s momentum roaring after 5 wickets were down for 83 runs. Once Arya departed, Shashank took charge, ensuring there was no dip in intensity, with Marco Jansen giving the final push past 200 with an unbeaten 65-run stand.
After winning the toss, Shreyas Iyer backed his batters to go big, and Punjab Kings delivered in style. Arya came out like a man on a mission, blasting a jaw-dropping 53 off just 19 balls in the Powerplay, even as wickets tumbled at the other end. He then carried on his rampage, bringing up a spectacular 39-ball century in a breathtaking display of power-hitting.
That was an electrifying first innings, with Punjab Kings storming to a colossal 219, putting them firmly in the driver’s seat as they head into the break. While Chennai Super Kings had their moments, their bowlers were left helpless against the sheer onslaught that started with Priyansh Arya’s brilliance and ended with Shashank Singh’s finishing fireworks.
Is that a run out? Seems like Noor Ahmad has done well to save a run for his side, but Shashank Singh could have made his ground. The umpires have sent it upstairs for a check. There is a direct hit but Shashank Singh dives to make it in comfortably. NOT OUT it will be.
19.6: Matheesha Pathirana to Shashank Singh, Shashank Singh gets to his FIFTY on the final ball! Fuller in length, outside off, Singh creams the drive all along the ground to the left of long off. Noor Ahmad sprints and slides to his left there and does well to prevent the boundary. Noor gets back up on his feet but the batters are quick to sneak in the third run. The throw goes to the bowling end and Matheesha Pathirana collects and takes the bails off but Singh is in with a dive. 12 runs off the final over and the Punjab Kings finish with 219!
19.5: Matheesha Pathirana to Marco Jansen, On a hard length, near the tramline on off, Marco shapes up for the scoop initially but then adjusts to the line as he tries to steer it with an open bat face. Gets an under edge that goes to the left of the keeper. MS Dhoni is caught wrong-footed but does well to make the stop with his left hand. Single taken.
19.4: Matheesha Pathirana to Marco Jansen, SIX! One hand comes off the bat but it still goes all the way! Pace taken off by Matheesha Pathirana, on a length, on off, Marco crouches and backs away. Gets deceived by the change of pace but still goes through with the shot. Connects nicely and it sails over long on for a six.
19.3: Matheesha Pathirana to Shashank Singh, So far, so good from Pathirana! With a slingy action, this tails back in, low full toss, Singh ekes out an inside edge onto the pads. A single is taken as the ball rolls away on the off side. 2 runs off the first 3 balls.
19.2: Matheesha Pathirana to Shashank Singh, At pace, on a length, outside off, Shashank Singh walks across his stumps and attempts the scoop with fine leg inside the circle but misses.
19.2: Matheesha Pathirana to Shashank Singh, Wide! Fires in a yorker but it sneaks just down leg, Shashank Singh gets inside the line but misses the tickle.
19.1: Matheesha Pathirana to Shashank Singh, Starts well, does Pathirana! A well-disguised slower one, on a back of a length, around off, Shashank Singh swings across the line way too early and fails to connect.
Who will bowl the final over? Mukesh Choudhary or Matheesha Pathirana? The latter it is then! 3-0-40-0 so far.
18.6: Khaleel Ahmed to Shashank Singh, Nails the yorker, at the toes, Shashank Singh clips it through square leg for a single.
18.5: Khaleel Ahmed to Shashank Singh, FOUR! Gap picked to perfection! On the pads, on a length, Shashank Singh stays deep in the crease and brings his bottom hand into play. Whips it right between deep mid-wicket and long on. The ball bounces just in front of the boundary cushions.
18.4: Khaleel Ahmed to Marco Jansen, Serves the yorker, on middle, Marco knocks it to long on for a run.
18.3: Khaleel Ahmed to Marco Jansen, Another short ball by Khaleel, on middle, Marco Jansen pulls it to the left of deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs.
18.2: Khaleel Ahmed to Marco Jansen, FOUR! Edged away! Banged into the deck, over middle, Marco Jansen tries to take the short ball on but gets an outside edge that beats the diving Ravichandran Ashwin at short third to his left for a boundary.
18.1: Khaleel Ahmed to Marco Jansen, Buzzers! On the pads from over the wicket, on a good length, Jansen misses the flick and wears it on the pads. Jansen sneaks in a quick leg bye as the ball goes off the pads towards backward point. The fielder has a shy at the bowling end but misses. The ball rolls towards long on and that allows the batters to get one more.
