Alappuzha, Kerala: The Kerala Lottery Department has discontinued the practice of requiring agency seals on the back of lottery tickets. The department clarified that tickets without an agency seal are not fake, addressing growing concerns after the introduction of unsealed tickets.
To verify the authenticity of the tickets, buyers can scan the QR code through the 'Bhagya Keralam' mobile app.
When the sale of unsealed tickets began recently, confusion arose in some areas of Alappuzha district. Several small vendors were hesitant to accept the unsealed tickets, fearing that customers would think they were counterfeit. As a result, some agents were forced to seal the tickets to avoid losing sales. This misunderstanding shows that the new policy has not yet fully reached the grassroots level, with many local vendors unaware of the change.
Why the seal was removed
The Lottery Department decided to remove the agency seal on the back of tickets to address several practical issues. The department noted that sealing millions of tickets would be a difficult and time-consuming task. Also, the ink from the seal often damaged the tickets, especially affecting the QR code, which is crucial for redeeming winning tickets.
While the removal of the agency seal aims to streamline the process, it has raised concerns for elderly customers who are used to buying tickets with the seal as a mark of authenticity. Many older buyers have difficulty using the Bhagya Keralam app to scan the QR code and verify the ticket's legitimacy. This could lead to confusion and hesitation among a section of the population that relies on traditional methods of checking ticket authenticity.
