Meghalaya’s ambitious digital lottery project, EasyLotter, has run into legal trouble months after its launch in 2024. The state government confirmed on Tuesday that the fully digital lottery is currently facing legal and operational challenges.
According to a report by Hub News, the lottery, which was described as the first of its kind in India, was launched with high hopes. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated EasyLotter in New Delhi earlier this year. He said the initiative was introduced to modernise the lottery system through technology and transparency.
“As far as I know, this was the first of its kind in the country when it was launched,” said Sangma. “We were very optimistic about it because of the technology being used. The transparency it ensured made us believe this could be the future of lotteries in India.”
However, the project has not progressed as expected. Sangma admitted that EasyLotter had not operated at the level initially envisioned. “With so many complexities arising, the lottery has not functioned at the optimal level we had envisioned,” he stated.
The Chief Minister explained that while the initiative was meant to introduce a new digital approach, several legal hurdles have come up. “This technological intervention was seen as a fresh way to modernise the system. But, as expected, legal challenges have also emerged,” he added.
Sangma noted that the legal issues are not limited to Meghalaya. “There are ongoing court cases, some of which are still being fought,” he said. “These involve multiple operators across different states, not just Meghalaya.”
He also commented on the complexity of lottery laws in India. “It’s a massive industry, with different states having their own laws and regulations. That’s why this initiative has run into legal hurdles.”
Despite the obstacles, the state government remains hopeful. “We hope for a resolution soon. Our goal was to bring more transparency, build confidence in the system, and, of course, generate more revenue for the state,” Sangma said.
Currently, the EasyLotter project is on hold while legal proceedings continue. The Meghalaya government is awaiting further developments before deciding the next steps.
