David Miller is in for a chat. Mentions that the feedback from those who spent time in the middle suggested the pitch was a bit slow and the ball tended to stick. While he feels it’s a decent surface, he says that variations will be key for the bowlers. Speaking about the conditions, he says there’s no dew at the moment but hopes the bowlers can execute the plans discussed over the past few days. On Hardik Pandya, he states that he’s a quality bowler whose bouncer comes on quicker than expected and praises his ability to hold the length well. He hopes his own bowlers can replicate that control. When asked about reaching the milestone of 3000 IPL runs, he admits he wasn’t aware of it and calls it a great privilege to have played in the IPL for so long. He adds that when someone plays for an extended period, the milestones are bound to come.
With just four overs left in the innings and the run rate hovering around the 10-mark, the South African duo of Markram and Miller continued to stay aggressive in their approach. Markram reached a well-constructed fifty, showcasing his class throughout the rebuilding phase, but perished at the most crucial juncture. But with Miller’s late fireworks, LSG crossed the 200-run mark, as they managed to score. Hardik Pandya finished off with his best IPL figures, taking a 5-fer, and came up trumps with the ball.
Markram continued to hold steady from one end, finding the boundary when needed. He found an able ally in Ayush Badoni as they formed a solid recovery partnership. The run rate that had plummeted around the halfway mark soared back to 10 runs per over as the duo shifted gears. Just when the freefall looked to be transforming into an upward trajectory, Badoni’s fall against Ashwani Kumar brought another slowdown, but only for a brief period.
The pitch looked tailor-made for batting, and with MI’s new-ball attack failing to make inroads, Vignesh Puthur stepped up to deliver the crucial breakthrough they desperately needed. As often happens, one wicket triggered another, with Nicholas Pooran’s aggressive approach backfiring quickly. What had been a rocket-fueled start for LSG suddenly nosedived as two more quick wickets fell, including the valuable scalp of Pant.
After struggling with opening partnerships earlier in the season, LSG’s top order finally dominated the Powerplay. Mitchell Marsh came out swinging and hammered runs at will, while Aiden Markram played the supporting role perfectly from the other end. Marsh blazed his way to a fifty within the Powerplay, pushing LSG to an impressive 69/0 in six overs, with Marsh alone contributing 60 of those runs.
Lucknow Super Giants manage to get past the 200-run mark, as they scored at the rate of 11.40 runs per over in the last five. To be fair, this is a very good total on this kind of a wicket. Mumbai Indians did keep chipping in with wickets at regular intervals, but LSG found rescuers who kept scoring quick runs.
Can Hardik get another wicket here?
19.6: Hardik Pandya to Avesh Khan, A couple of runs to end the innings! On a nagging length, on off, Avesh hits it more of the upper half of the bat to the right of long off and comes charging back for the second run. 15 runs off the final over and LSG finish with 203!
19.6: Hardik Pandya to Avesh Khan, Wide given but Hardik Pandya has challenged the decision! Hardik bowls it short, outside off, Avesh moves across his stumps and has a swing at it but misses. The replays show that the ball was beyond the revised wide guideline and the on-field call of wide is upheld.
Avesh Khan walks out to bat now and will face the final delivery of the first innings.
19.5: Hardik Pandya to Akash Deep, OUT! TAKEN! MAIDEN FIVE-WICKET HAUL IN T20s FOR HARDIK! Pandya bends his back and digs it in short, outside off. The width is there for Deep to cash in and he throws his hands at the delivery. Slices it towards deep backward point where Mitchell Santner runs across to his right and takes a well-judged catch. Hat-trick ball coming up.
Akash Deep is the new batter in.
19.4: Hardik Pandya to David Miller, OUT! CAUGHT! David Miller holes out with 2 balls left in the innings! A quickfire cameo of 27 runs from 14 balls from David. Pace on and on a short of a good length, on middle, Miller hangs back for the pull but gets it height on the bat. Gets the height but not the distance. Naman Dhir takes an easy catch in the deep. Second catch for Dhir this evening. LSG are 200/7.
19.3: Hardik Pandya to David Miller, FOUR! Helped away! Hardik goes into the wicket and it is the pace-off delivery, around leg, Miller gets inside the line and helps it away to the left of deep fine leg for a boundary. 200 comes up for the Lucknow Super Giants!
19.2: Hardik Pandya to David Miller, SIX! Nicely struck! Pandya goes searching for the yorker but ends up serving a low full toss, on middle, Miller takes it on the full and gets enough height on it to clear Raj Angad Bawa at long on for a six.
19.1: Hardik Pandya to David Miller, In the air…but it drops well short! On a short of a good length, on middle, David Miller shapes up to heave it away on the leg side. Skies it straight up but it falls in the vacant mid-wicket region, well in front of the rushing Naman Dhir. A couple of runs taken and this brings up 3000 runs for Miller in IPL.
Hardik Pandya (3-0-21-3) to wrap the first innings.
18.6: Trent Boult to Shardul Thakur, FOUR! Off the top edge but they all count! Trent Boult bangs it in on a shortish length, over middle, Shardul Thakur swivels for the pull but gets a top edge that sails well over short fine leg for a one-bounce boundary. 11 runs and a wicket off the over.
18.5: Trent Boult to David Miller, Nails the yorker, on middle, Miller jams it out back past the bowler for one more.
18.4: Trent Boult to Shardul Thakur, Gets it very full, on middle, Thakur digs it out to backward square leg for one.
