Gujarat Titans (GT) secured a commanding seven-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday (April 19).
This victory propels the Gujarat Titans to the summit of the IPL 2025 standings, underscoring their formidable form.
Delhi Capitals: 203/8 (20 overs)
Gujarat Titans: 204/3 (19.2 overs)
Result: Gujarat Titans won by 7 wickets
DC posted a competitive total of 203/8. The innings was characterized by a balanced scoring effort, with no individual surpassing the 40-run mark. Captain Axar Patel led the scoreboard with a 32-ball 39, while Ashutosh Sharma provided a late surge, contributing 37 off 19 deliveries. The top order, including KL Rahul (28 off 14), Karun Nair (31 off 18), and Abishek Porel (18 off 9), set a brisk pace during the powerplay.
GT’s Prasidh Krishna was instrumental in curbing DC’s momentum, claiming four wickets for 41 runs, including two in successive deliveries, thereby reinforcing his position as the Purple Cap holder.
In pursuit of 204, GT faced an early setback with the dismissal of captain Shubman Gill for 7, resulting from a direct hit by Karun Nair. However, a formidable partnership between Jos Buttler and Sherfane Rutherford stabilized the innings.
Buttler delivered an exceptional performance, remaining unbeaten at 97 runs, narrowly missing his eighth IPL century. Despite experiencing cramps, he dominated the DC bowling attack, notably scoring five consecutive boundaries off Mitchell Starc in a single over. Rutherford complemented Buttler’s efforts with a rapid 46 off 26 balls, and together they amassed a 102-run partnership for the third wicket. GT achieved the target with four deliveries remaining.
Shubman Gill (GT): At one point, it looked like the total was going to be 220-230. The way we pulled back, credit to the bowlers. Even in the first game, chasing around 245, we were right in the game, lost by just 10 runs. We’ve been chasing well, we’ve been defending well. They were ahead in the game, with Axar batting, it was difficult to hit the fast bowlers, so we thought we’ll continue with them. Disappointing way to get out (run-out), but we’ve got plenty of games here and hopefully will get my chance. Magnificent the way Butter and Rutherford rotated strike and those hits were tremendous. It was not just brutal hitting, it was very calculated batting, it was a treat to watch. Very happy to get this win.
Axar Patel (DC): We were 10-15 runs short. When we tried to accelerate, we kept losing wickets. We couldn’t finish the way we wanted. We did bowl decently. Had we managed to create few more chances, things could have been closer. It was a matter of couple of hits. We won’t think much about this loss.
