Young Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre is set to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad at Chennai Super Kings for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
This decision comes after Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow fracture.
Sources within CSK confirmed to Sportstar that the youngster from Mumbai will join the team ahead of its away fixture against Mumbai Indians on April 20.
Mhatre had earlier been called to Chennai for a trial, along with a few other domestic cricketers. It is believed that the team management chose the 17-year-old for his aggressive batting. His impressive domestic season also played a significant role in his selection.
In nine first-class matches, Mhatre has scored 504 runs, including two centuries and a fifty. In seven List A games, he has already amassed 458 runs, with two hundreds.
“The team would have preferred him to join as soon as possible, but there are a few formalities still pending. He should be able to link up with the side ahead of the game against MI at Wankhede Stadium,” a source stated.
CSK, the five-time IPL champions, is currently languishing at the bottom of the table, with just two points from six matches.
