International Lottery Day 2024: Know the History Behind Lottery, How it Started? – Jagran Josh

Every year on August 27, International Lottery Day is observed globally. This day honours the joy, optimism, and aspirations that lotteries inspire. Lotteries have captured people’s attention since ancient times because they give the enticing possibility of transforming a small investment into enormous wealth.
Although lotteries are sometimes linked to the potential to win huge sums of money, they also serve a vital function in funding charitable and public activities. A sizable percentage of the winnings from several state-run lotteries are donated to infrastructure, healthcare, and education initiatives.
For instance, the bulk of lottery proceeds in the US are used to support scholarships and public education. Apart from providing funds for public services, lotteries frequently support charitable projects.
Certain lotteries are made specifically to generate funds for charitable organisations and community initiatives, including medical research, disaster assistance, and cultural preservation. In this sense, lotteries are a method for people to give back to society by turning the hopes and dreams of individual participants into real advantages for entire communities.
The lottery has a long history that crosses many cultures and continents and extends back to thousands of years. Here is an overview:
The Han Dynasty in China is considered to have observed the first lotteries ever documented. The Great Wall of China was one of the large-scale government initiatives that these lotteries helped to finance. It is believed that the lottery originated from the game “Keno”.
Lotteries were a common form of entertainment during dinner parties in ancient Rome. Tickets were distributed, and prizes ranged from expensive jewels to dinnerware. Rome’s first official lottery is said to have been started by Emperor Augustus, whose money was utilised to rebuild the city.
In Italy, lotteries were first known to exist in Europe during the 15th century. Building public works, such as roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, was frequently funded using the money earned. To raise money for a battle against Venice, Milan hosted one of the earliest lotteries ever recorded in 1449.
After witnessing the Italian lotteries’ popularity, King Francis I of France introduced the lottery to his country. In 1539, the king approved the Loterie Royale, the first lottery in French history. But because the tickets were so expensive, the general public did not find it very popular.
Britannica mentions: “Francis I of France permitted the establishment of lotteries for private and public profit in several cities between 1520 and 1539. Possibly the first European public lottery to award money prizes was the ventura, held from 1476 in the Italian city-state of Modena under the auspices of the ruling d’Este family (see House of Este). However, the lottery that came to serve as a model was the Genoa lottery. This was such a successful enterprise (in spite of resistance from the Roman Catholic Church) that the practice quickly spread to other Italian cities and elsewhere.“
In order to raise funds for public initiatives, such as the restoration of docks and other infrastructure, Queen Elizabeth I launched the first English state lottery. There were tapestries, plates, and cash in the prize pool. The lottery was first drawn in 1569, and it was widely reported.
Britannica states: “Queen Elizabeth I chartered a general lottery in England in 1566 to raise money for repairing harbours and other public purposes. In 1612 the Virginia Company obtained permission from King James I for a lottery to help in financing the settlement of Jamestown in the New World.”
Because of widespread fraud and corruption, lotteries became a controversial topic in the 19th century. They were consequently outlawed in numerous states. However, lotteries resurfaced in the 20th century, starting in 1964 when New Hampshire created the nation’s first contemporary state lottery.
National lotteries have been established in many countries to serve as a means of raising money for public services, including infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Today, lotteries have become a worldwide phenomenon. Online lotteries have become increasingly popular as a result of technological breakthroughs like the Internet.
The need to encourage appropriate gaming behaviours is essential as lotteries are gaining popularity continuously. Even though lotteries can be thrilling and enjoyable as an entertainment source, they can also result in problematic behaviour.
Organisations all around the world are highlighting the value of responsible gaming on International Lottery Day 2024, advising participants to set boundaries, play within their means, and get assistance if gambling becomes an issue.
The way lotteries are run also takes ethical issues into account. Fairness and transparency are essential to preserving the public’s confidence in lottery systems. Technological developments in recent years have improved lotteries’ security and integrity, guaranteeing fair drawing procedures and an equal chance of winning for all players.
In addition to celebrating the past and present, International Lottery Day 2024 offers a glimpse into the future of lotteries. The potential for lotteries is endless as technology develops further, providing fresh chances for excitement, connections, and a positive impact on society.
