There Are Murders
There’s currently a bit of a strange situation going on in the Netflix top 10 list, where a new show has premiered on Netflix and has done extremely well, but it has not been reviewed by any critics at all. Not one. But as someone who has started the series, I can say it’s gripping and definitely worth watching. So far, it’s the best crime show I’ve seen for a while on the service.
That show is The Åre Murders, a Swedish noir mystery that has just premiered. It’s at #2 in the US behind only the return of Sweet Magnolias, but around the globe? It’s currently the top show in the most countries in all Netflix regions right now. By my count that is 33 different regions, and Prison Cell 211 is the next closest with two dozen or so. That show is only #7 on Netflix’s US list right now.
What’s The Åre Murders about? As in, what’s the context of the murder? Here’s the official description of the five part series, where “Åre” is not “are” in English, but rather the name of a ski resort in Sweden:
“The disappearance of a young girl reveals the dark secrets of a seemingly serene community in this Swedish crime series based on Viveca Sten’s novels.”

The show is not listed as a limited series, so if it performs well, it may be back for more. She’s written a number of books, and while the Sandhamn Murders series is the biggest with eight entries, The Åre Murders has two books, so at least a second season could be based on that. The Sandhamn Murders was already adapted into a show which got 100 million viewers several years ago. From the looks of it The Åre Murders may be a big hit as well.
The rest of the US list has the new influencer scam series Apple Cider Vinegar at #3. The Night Agent has fallen to #4, though it remains at #1 in many countries. The Recruit is down to #6 after never getting past #3, and I am concerned for its future.
As for The Åre Murders, you can either trust me that it’s quite good, or you’ll just have to give it a go and try it for yourself. As a big fan of foreign murder stories, I’m the target audience. Where there are some reviews is IMDB, which has it at a 6.6/10. In the context of IMDB ratings, that’s actually pretty good. I’m sure the critics will have takes soon enough here.
